Diablo 3 Auction House Does Cash, More

On the plus side, Blizzard will provide an auction house that deals in cash. On the negative side, Diablo 3 will require a constant Internet connection. You can forget about mods, too.

As reported earlier, Blizzard scheduled a press event last Tuesday giving the media access to Diablo 3. Because everyone was under an NDA, the info couldn't be released until today. That said, a good number of details are starting to make their way into the stream including the game's required constant Internet connectivity and an auction house dealing with real cash.

But first, Monday brought the unsurprising news that Blizzard's highly-anticipated action-RPG will require a constant Internet connection. Naturally this DRM method will help fight against a flood of pirated versions that could potentially flood torrent and Usenet channels. But Blizzard has also chosen this route so that player characters can move from single-player to multi-player seamlessly.

In essence, Diablo 3 cannot be played offline.

"We thought about this quite a bit," said executive producer Rob Pardo. "One of the things that we felt was really import was that if you did play offline, if we allowed for that experience, you’d start a character, you’d get him all the way to level 20 or level 30 or level 40 or what have you, and then at that point you might decide to want to venture onto Battle.net. But you’d have to start a character from scratch, because there’d be no way for us to guarantee no cheats were involved, if we let you play on the client and then take that character online."

"Now, that doesn’t mean you can’t play a game by yourself – of course you can," he added. "You can go into and start any game that you want, you’ll just be connected to the Battle.net servers, and we can authenticate your character."

In addition, Pardo revealed a list of Battle.net features that will be embedded in the game, requiring a constant Internet connection. These include: persistent friends list; cross-game chat via the RealID system; persistent characters that are stored server-side; persistent party system; player-versus-player and public game matchmaking; dynamic drop-in/out for co-op; larger item stash, shared among all of your characters; the auction house; achievements and detailed stat-tracking; the Banner system.

Now comes another shocker: no mods for Diablo 3. “For a variety of gameplay and security reasons, we will not be supporting bots or mods in Diablo 3, and they’ll be expressly prohibited by our terms of use for the game," read an official Diablo 3 FAQ handed out during the press event.

So no offline mode, no bots and no mods. Is there any good news stemming from the press event? Certainly. Joystiq reports that Diablo 3 will feature two in-game auction houses to sell items from player to player: one using in-game gold and one using real-world cash.

According to the report, the latter auction house will be like an "eBay for Sanctuary," allowing players to put items up for sale in each of the game's various regions around the world. Blizzard will take a fixed fee out of the eventual sale for listing and selling the virtual item. Players can either keep the cash in their Battle.net account to use on other Blizzard-related items, or cash out and pay a set percentage-based withdrawal fee. So far Blizzard hasn't revealed what third-party financial institution it plans to use.

"Ultimately, players want it," Pardo said in regards to the cash-based auction house. "If Blizzard doesn't do this system, I'm not so naive to think that [third-party auctions are] not going to happen. In the past we've really taken this hardline stance of, we will just try to stamp it down in every place that we can. And we could take that approach. But I actually think that with Diablo, it actually will end up being a good thing, at least something that players will be excited about. It really is something that a lot of players are already looking to do."

Blizzard Responds to Diablo 3 Online Complaints

After fans began to complain about Diablo 3's "always connected" requirement, Blizzard responded with a lengthy answer to their concerns.

Previews of Diablo 3 released earlier this week revealed that the upcoming action-RPG PC game will require a constant Internet connection even when playing the single-player campaign. While the news isn't unexpected, it means that gamers won't be able to hack their way through dungeons on their laptops while the home network is down or if they're on the road where connections aren't available.

According to prior reports, this Internet requirement possibly serves as a means to curb piracy. But it also prevents the user from having to generate a separate character -- a separate "path" --in order to play multiplayer games on Battle.net.

"We thought about this quite a bit," said executive producer Rob Pardo earlier this week.

Senior producer Alex Mayberry told MTV that gamers can play by themselves, but the characters are stored on Blizzard's Battle.net servers. "You have to authenticate through our servers to be able to play the game," he said. "I think it's not just 'Diablo 3' but with our games as a whole we're tying everything into Battle.net these days...We can provide a much a much more stable, connected, safer experience than we could if we let people play off-line."

In addition to the player character aspect, the single-player mode will have Battle.net elements including a persistent friends list, cross-game chat via the RealID system, player versus player and more. These require a constant Internet connection obviously.

But despite the reasons behind the always-connected requirements, fans are not happy with the decision. MTV uses this posting on Reddit as an example which has more than 2,700 comments, most of which express their distaste for the always-connected requirement.

"I'm actually kind of surprised in terms of there even being a question in today's age around online play and the requirement around that," said Blizzard's vice president of online technologies Robert Bridenbecker. "We've been doing online gameplay for 15 years now…and with 'World of WarCraft' and our roots in Battle.net and now with 'Diablo 3,' it really is just the nature of how things are going, the nature of the industry. When you look at everything you get by having that persistent connection on the servers, you cannot ignore the power and the draw of that."

He went on to add that piracy and DRM really weren't a topic of conversation when discussing how the team wanted the connection to operate. Instead, they focused on the feature-set and storing the player character in the cloud.

"You're guaranteeing that there are no hacks, no dupes," he said. "All of these things were points of discussion, but the whole copy protection, piracy thing, that's not really entering into why we want to do it. I'm a huge purveyor of online sites and from my standpoint, I don't look at DRM solutions and go, 'Wow, those are awesome.' I look at those and say, 'Wow, those kind of suck.' But if there's a compelling reason for you to have that online connectivity that enhances the gameplay, that doesn't suck. That's awesome."

He also offered other explanations such as eliminating the need to have a separate offline and online path. To find out more, head here.

Blizzard Reveals Inferno Difficulty for Diablo 3

Diablo 3 will have a fourth difficulty mode, Inferno, that will feature enemies at levels higher than the player character level cap.

During Gamescom 2011, Blizzard's game director Jay Wilson revealed that Diablo 3 will feature a fourth difficulty mode called "Inferno" for those who thrive on extreme punishment. Featuring monsters with a minimum level of 61, this mode is aimed at players who have maxed out their character at the level 60 cap.

According to Wilson, enemies will get a boost in health, damage, damage resistances and aggression in Inferno. They'll even have access to a larger suite of powers. With that in mind, players should expect a tougher game across the board, even for experienced hunters who previously chewed up the first two installments.

"The idea was that we wanted a difficulty mode where the entire game was viable," Wilson said. "So you don't have to pick and choose key areas [to replay]."

Wilson said that the team has created a "flattened" difficulty experience so that players revisit the world seeking "bigger and bolder challenges" rather than jumping in just to grab unique loot drops or to fight one specific breed of minions.

"We do expect there to be a certain amount of... runs to get items, but we wanted players to do it over a lot more content," Wilson said. "We're trying to make sure that there's a lot more opportunities for players to see a lot more variety."

He added that if player behavior does lean towards the quick encounters, then Blizzard may encourage and reward players for doing more "diverse plays."

That said, there will be unique items only uncovered in the Inferno mode including Runestones, armor, weapons and other items. These will be visually distinct from the versions available on lower difficulty levels. This means Inferno uniques will have its own set of artwork, so those branding Inferno-based weapons and armor will undoubtedly be noticed on lower-difficulty raids.
